Global Warming: The scale of the problem and the path to the solution

This talk will focus on the content of Dr. Weaver's recently published book:
"Keeping our Cool: Canada in a Warming World" (Viking Canada). The foundations of the science of global warming will be presented and a discussion of our present climate will be framed within a historical perspective of the Earth's climate over the last 650,000 years. The range of projections of climate change over the next century will be summarized and the public confusion arising from the media portrayal of the science and its entry into the political arena will be discussed. Finally, how the Kyoto
Protocol and other potential international policy options fit within the framework of necessary actions required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be reviewed.

Bio
Dr. Andrew J. Weaver is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in climate
modelling and analysis in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University
of Victoria (UVic). He joined UVic in 1992 after serving three years as Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) University
Research Fellow in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences,
McGill University. He has authored or coauthored over 180 peer-reviewed
papers in climate, meteorology, oceanography, earth science, policy,
education and anthropology journals. He was involved as a Lead Author in the
United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change second, third
and fourth scientific assessments and was co-chair of the UN WCRP
CLIVAR-PAGES Intersection Panel. He is currently the Chief Editor of the
Journal of Climate. He is the past recipient of the NSERC E. W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship (1997), Killam Research Fellowship (2002) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2008). He received the CIAR Young Explorers award as one of the top 20 scientists in Canada under the age of 40 and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2001) and of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.
