Vancouver MetaFilter Meetup Photos

By Richard Eriksson on April 28, 2004 - 1:00pm

Through Flickr I found out about a MetaFilter meetup that happened last Friday. I'm a lapsed member/reader at MetaFilter, and besides, I'm usually more interested in MetaTalk (where people discuss the administration and other aspects of the MetaFilter site) anyway. In MeTa there is a discussion of the meetup and links to photos courtesy Vancouver MeFi users filmgoerjuan who blogs at The Calm Dreariness and timeistight, who blogs at Time Is Tight.

I'll be watching MetaTalk for the next one.

Douglas Engelbart - Inventor of the Mouse, windowing interfaces, etc. in the 1960s - BCNET 2004 at SFU

Douglas Engelbart - Inventor of the Mouse, windowing interfaces, etc. in the 1960s - BCNET 2004 at SFU

Dr. Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse and many of the concepts behind today's computer user interface such as the windowing system used today by all computers (Macs, Windows and Linux). Without his work and vision (that he first articulated in the 1950s and demonstrated in 1968), there would no Web, no Internet and no UrbanVancouver.com!

Engelbart gave the keynote address today at the second day of the 2004 BCNET - West Grid - Netera Advanced Networks Conference at SFU Harbour Centre.

The focus of his work today is synthesizing his life work . It's impossible to summarize his thoughts in two sentences but I'll try. The challenges we face today require networked improvement communities (NICs) that use Dynamic Knowledge Repositories to continually improve how we improve our processes to improve at all levels (individual to global). Only by improving the way we improve and by scaling it this to the global community, can we avoid crashing.

An urban Vancouver ritual. Going to Granville Island for food. It was cloudy at 9:14; it's now cloudy again but was sunny until about 12:30. Gotta love our unsettled weather.

Take 5 - BC Cappuccino Fern

Taken yesterday morning. Apparently, Caffe Artigiano originated the 'BC Fern in coffee motif''BC Cappuccino Fern motif'. Others, such as Take 5, followed suit. And according to Bike Trouble, an artist at a cafe in Victoria, Australia called Flavours of Lakhoum actually draws faces in their coffee!

Vancouver City Chase

By Richard Eriksson on April 26, 2004 - 10:12pm

BitterWoo points out that The City Chase is coming to Vancouver May 15th. I saw a mini-documentary of this a couple weeks ago, and it looks interesting: evidently it is "part urban obstacle course, part scavenger hunt". I've heard of urban scavenger hunts that my friends have gone on for fun (the stories I hear of them are unsuitable for a family weblog), but The City Chase looks like the commercialized and organized version of amateur ad hoc events.
