Trying a new way to sell my place. Worth a shot? One small step for Man...

By nshb on May 9, 2008 - 12:41pm

YOUNG CONDO SELLER INSPIRED TO GIVE 10% OF HIS REAL ESTATE PROFITS TO THE ENVIRONMENT!

Sayo Nickerson - Your Green Realtor
Nathaniel Brown, a young 25-year old condo owner in Kitsilano has decided that he wants to make a difference and help the environment. But he doesn’t want to just make a small difference; He is donating a full 10% of the profits he will be receiving on the sale of his condo (which should amount to $15,000) to local environmental groups.

This action was inspired when Nathaniel came across Vancouver's "Green" Realtor Sayo Nickerson of ReMax Real Estate Services who currently donates 10% of her net revenues from real estate sales to three local environmental groups. "I care about the environment and want to make a difference too" says Brown. "Seeing how Sayo does it showed me I could do the same!"

Brown’s property is a penthouse 2 bedroom 2-bathroom suite currently listed at $524,900. The first Open Houses will be this weekend on Saturday from 1-3 pm and Sunday from 2:30 - 4:30 pm. Come have a look and enjoy complimentary snacks at 401-1990 Dunbar St. (at the corner of West 4th Ave.)

Ecological aquaculture is an alternative model of aquaculture development that implements the use of ecosystems design, ecological principles, social ecology and systems ecology paradigms for the development of more sustainable aquaculture operations. Ecological aquaculture farms are “aquaculture ecosystems”. Ecological aquaculture plans for not only for production, but also for sustaining vital social networks that nurture ecosystem health and promote the stewardship practices essential for economic and social profit. Ecological aquaculture incorporates — at the outset and not as an afterthought — planning for community development, and concerns for the wider social, economic, and environmental contexts of aquaculture at the commercial, school, and homeowner scales.

Social Media Round-up from the Vancouver Green Living Show

By uncleweed on March 19, 2008 - 8:17pm

A squad of environmentally conscious bloggers, podcasters, and video-makers joined the other sustainability-minded visitors at the inaugural Vancouver Green Living show. The resulting collection provides deep coverage of a variety of interesting businesses, unique products, and people effectuating positive change by creating and marketing sustainable alternatives to polluting products.

The crew of grassroots media makers expressed a variety of point of views and focused on their particular interests while finding surprising products under the BC Place dome from February 29th ~ March 2nd. Here's a brief recap from the frogsquad's work:

Lisa Tilson discovered some natural toys, questioned the role of big corporations at a green show, and made her podcasting debut discussing city bikes and hemp clothing.

I want the last four hours of my life back: EcoDensity Meeting Part III

By samanthaorwell on March 4, 2008 - 7:28pm

See whole post: http://thevancouvermanifesto.blogspot.com/2008/03/i-want-last-four-hours...

Monday nights EcoDensity public hearing event started at 6 and ended just past 10. It didn’t help that the last speaker from SmartGrowth BC was a horrid speaker that stumbled and stuttered his way into saying absolutely nothing. This post will be equally as boring so I don’t blame you if you want to close the window now. But just in case you were wondering what went on in Part III I’ll give you the 10 highlights of the evening (highlights being a very generous word for what transpired).

1)Patrick Condon- (always fun to see in person somebody you quote a lot. ) Had discussion with Toderian about the hateration with developers. I don’t know if Cadman is right, or if he’s just milking the tension for all its worth but it seems like people are more in hate with developers than ever before. See http://www.ctvbc.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20080227/BC_Cadman_Candidat...
Discussion a) Allocating 20% to affordable/social housing does not guarantee the construction. Buying land and construction are two separate entities and processes.
Discussion b) Tradeoff between affordable/social housing and public amenities?

February 27th, 2008 EcoDensity Talk #2

This morning I took the bus out to UBC. I used to do this commute daily during my undergrad and had no problem with it since it really was my only option. Now that I have to have a car for work purposes I’ve gotten used to my own personal space. I like personal space. Anyhow, back to the bus. Taking transit it always the same during peak hours. The two qualities that remain constant are 1) Busses are always at least 10 minutes late, and 2) The late bus is picking up slack for the other late bus so its packed- the dozens of people waiting at the bus stop won’t fit.

…I’m so glad transit responds to increased ridership with the exact same amount of busses that still arrive late.

But let me tell you two more trends that I am beginning to see.
The first, and completely irrelevant point, is that bus drivers are getting hotter. Yep, I said it, the days of ugly old fat bus drivers are over. I’ve seen QUITE a few cute guys and a couple nice lookin’ gals sitting in the drivers seat. And I must say it does make it quite a bit easier to smile as you get on the bus and leave that “thank you” as you get off.
