Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival

By jsquire on July 16, 2010 - 10:20am

Aug 14 2010 - 12:00pm
Aug 14 2010 - 4:00pm

Strong, bold and a bit nutty, the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival is all set to go at Whistler Blackcomb Mountain this summer. Canadian cheese rolling is a gentler version of the whacky UK tradition. On August 14th, contestants will run after a giant 11- pound wheel of Canadian cheese made by Natural Pastures of British Columbia. Last year’s event was such a success that Dairy Farmers of Canada is bringing back the crazy kookiness of Cheese Rolling for Canadian families
to enjoy. Cheese-loving, adventurous Canadians will race down Blackcomb Mountain from noon to 4:00 p.m. after the coveted wheel of BC cheese in hopes of winning the title of Cheese Rolling Champion. Both the male and female winners get to keep the cheese wheel and a one-year Whistler Blackcomb ski pass.

Featuring recipes from 25 West End eateries and culinary hotspots, the book champions local businesses and community spirit while drawing attention to food security issues. Author Wendy Walsh, who began the project with Cook the Hood: Commercial Drive in 2008, explains: "These books celebrate the people and the flavours that set a neighbourhood apart, while helping those without access to nutritious food."

The brainchild of Vancouver entrepreneur Wendy Walsh, Cook the Hood Publishing produces cookbooks with a difference. Each edition features culinary secrets from neighbourhood restaurants and other gustatory hotspots. Proceeds benefit Quest Outreach Society and local food security organizations. The series includes Cook the Hood books for Commercial Drive, the West End, and Kitsilano. Future editions will feature Gastown and Whistler Village.
