Glenn Bohn of The Vancouver Sun wrote “Tibet coverage ‘twisted, biased’” yesterday.
Basically, it says that Western media has been biased and given twisted coverage of Tibet protest. It mentions that most media images come from Westerners and/or tourists taking sensational videos, photos, or cell phone pics in the heat of protest. Western media heavily relies on these images to stir their columns and news stories.
On the other hand, “viewers of Chinese-language TV news broadcasts see the more of the "dark side and violence of the riots," including assaults against ethnic Chinese in Tibet. The Chinese news media also interviewed injured ethnic Chinese in hospitals.”
Our well-known SingTao Daily, privately owned Chinese newspaper run out of Vancouver, says that Western media are critical of ALL non-western governments, not only Communist China, and shouldn’t really take undue offense, saying that it doesn’t mean that Western countries, or specifically Canada, is breaking “friendly relations” with China.
I’m glad they brought this up. I am a huge fan of articles that show some reflexivity in discourse.

I think the combined distractions of work, travel, new responsibilities and my absolute addiction to the U.S. elections (yes I am drinking the Obama-Kool-Aid) I've been a little neglectful of VancouverVibe.ca and the blog. The good news is, things are back in motion! We've got a few cool new updates based on user-feedback in the pipeline and I would like to share them with you now:
- The Fancy-Shmancy Bookmarklet: Okay, it's not that fancy. Basically, if you're a Firefox or Safari user, simply drag our Bookmarklet (below) into your Bookmarks Bar. Now whenever you find a story you like, click on the Bookmarklet and it will fill in the URL and Title for you on VancouverVibe.ca and you're off to the races!

A couple of weeks ago I received some great feedback on a pet project a friend and I have taken on, VancouverVibe.ca, from a few members of Urban Vancouver. If you haven't come across it yet, VancouverVibe.ca is a user-contributed social news web-site, much like Digg, but focuses on Vancouver-specific content. We felt VancouverVibe would be a great forum for everyone from bloggers to musicians to small employers to further publicize their original content.
What we learned from the extensive feedback from members of this forum (as we take every opportunity to learn from this experience) is we need to enhance credibility and give the web-site a more personal feel. We've also started an advertising campaign on Facebook and on a local blog.
So, in that short time, and in large part thanks to the members of Urban Vancouver, we've:
Launched a new blog called TheCity: http://www.vancouvervibe.ca/blog
Added a Terms of Use Agreement to our Registration Page
Engaged new bloggers to submit their stories on the web-site
Attended Launch Party Vancouver 3 and intend to go to the Blogger Meet Up and Northern Voice
Surpassed 100 news stories and 50 members
Topped 1,400 unique visits in 2 weeks

Remember my mention yesterday of Open Office? Well, in today's news
a headline in The Inquirer says "IBM offers its flavour of Open Office
for free". It goes on to say that IBM has joined Sun and Google in
promoting the open source community, and has committed 25 developers
to it. The days of the locked-in proprietary package of programs
with an operating system are about over, Folks. I've said all along
that what we need is a basic O/S to which we can add our own choices
of components for browser, email, office suite, and media player.
Such as: Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, and WinAmp...
Another headline: "Air India probe blocked in 1989" - Seems to me
that we're devoting more space to this topic than the Second World
War. When are they going to move on ?
And Dame Kiri te Kanawa, asked to name the greatest singer that ever
lived, responded "The young Elvis Presley, without any doubt."
Hmmmm...."Me Jane, him Tarzan!" We didn't call him "Elvis The Pelvis"
for nothing, Kiddies. And when Kiri was born, Elvis was 9 years old.
Enjoy your day, Everyone !
P.S. - The classic definition of a Hippie is:
Look like Jane, Act like Tarzan, Smell like Cheetah.

Glancing at Google's headlines, I see that Russian billionaire
Deripaska is investing 1.54 billion in Magna, the auto parts
conglomerate owned by Bodacious Belinda's daddy. Does this mean
Belinda's going to take up wearing big furry hats, and dancing
the Hopak and drinking vodka? Only The Shadow knows....
Moving along here, Tony Blair is packing it in on June 27th, in
favour of....what?...sanity returning to Britain's foreign affairs perhaps?
And the world's eggheads are frantically cataloguing, during the
next ten years, all 1.8 million known species of animals, plants,
and other organisms, just before half of them go extinct...
Lastly, if your computer has Java's JRE installed, you might
want to check your version. The latest is JRE 1.6.0_01 and the
upgrade is still a free download. A big one. It added over 17,000
files to my system, and even though Java recommends keeping the
older versions on file in case older programs were written for
those, I dumped the previous version JRE 1.5.0_11, to reduce
that file total by about 14,000, to nearly where it was before
the upgrade. Everything still seems to be working just fine.
Enjoy your day, Folks.
