World Poetry Cafe Proudly Presents Rapper Robbie Engelquist from Canada!

Hailing from New Westminster BC, Canada, talented poet and rapper Robbie Engelquist joined hosts Ariadne Sawyer and Oparin Ortiz along with radio technician Medhi on the World Poetry Cafe Radio show, January 31st in downtown Vancouver, BC, on unceded First Nation land.

Robbie spoke about the therapeutic influence of rapping and poetry in his life and how it has empowered him in his life. He performs for youth with mental health issues and others as well. Robbie shared a new rap that he had just written and a poem. Guest host Oparin Ortiz spoke compared of some poems of poet Robert Frost to rap and a good discussion followed.The interview gave listeners a new appreciation of “Ethical Rap” and it’s transformational abilities.

Beautiful E-poems from Carol Knepper and Margaret Eaton rounded out the show.

Yilin Wang is a Generation Z writer and journalist studying at the University of British Columbia. She loves using her poems to weave lyrical tales, play with language, and advocate artistic pursuits. She is a member of the Word Poetry Youth Team and read her poetry at 6 events in 2011, including at the World Poetry International Festival and Word on the Street Vancouver. Her fiction, poetry, articles, and reviews have been published in Youthink Magazine, What If? Magazine, and Canadian Newcomer Magazine, as well as in anthologies and on websites. As a freelance journalist, she specializes in interviews and profiles of creative professionals, successful youths, and Canadian immigrants. Currently, she is working on a magic realism novel for young adults and a collection of short stories. Ariadne’s note:We were so impressed with the quality and the variety of the poems that were read on the radio show! Our goal for 2012 is to build up a powerful, confident and empowered World Poetry Youth Team and to provide venues for youth in an environment of respect and support. World Poetry believes that the youth are the beautiful voices of the future who will help to create a better world. We also want to congratulate the South Delta’s Artists Guild for their vision and hard work in this wonderful project.

Finally, our World Poetry Youth Ambassador to Afghanistan & the US and World Poetry Youth Team Member Alaha Ahrar will be the featured poet with her poem and a companion painting at the Grand Opening on Saturday the 8th of January. If you can, please go to the opening. If you are not able to attend, we will post photos of the event on this site.

World Poetry Proudly Presents Koyali Burman!

Last Tuesday night, hosts Ariadne Sawyer and Oparin Ortiz welcomed Koyali Burman to the World Poetry Cafe Radio Show on 102.7 FM! She read a poem of Tagore and spoke about her love of dance and the vital need to share art and culture in all communites. An e-poem called The Pitch That Proffers Peace by World Poetry Life Time Achievment Award Winner 2012, Richard Doiron was read by Ariadne.
